Itchy skin, also called "pruritus" is an uncomfortable skin condition that results in your scratching irresistibly, according to the Mayo Clinic. Itchy skin may also be accompanied by bumps, blisters or redness. To help reduce or prevent itchy skin, there are various vitamins you can take that are effective in providing itchy skin relief. Consult your doctor for guidance on taking vitamins for this condition.


There are many key factors which may contribute to itchy skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, internal diseases such as liver disease, thyroid problems, lymphoma or kidney failure can result in itchy skin. Irritation from certain products such as chemicals, wool or soaps can result in an allergic reaction, which may lead to itchy skin. Also, some drugs may cause widespread rashes and itchy skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin, effective in protecting your cells, tissues and organs from free radicals -- unstable molecules that are believed to play a role in enhancing the aging process, increasing the speed of wrinkle and fine-line formation, along with dry and brittle skin. Vitamin E helps to prevent dry skin, a trigger for itchiness, by keeping your skin moist and hydrated. Vitamin E can be found in wheat germ, corn, sunflower seeds and nuts.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and is also an antioxidant vitamin, which prevents the formation of free radicals and minimizes potential damage they may cause. Vitamin A prevents itchy skin by stimulating the production of sebum -- a natural oil produced by your body that helps to keep skin fresh. Vitamin A can be found in foods such as pumpkin, carrots, dark green vegetables and eggs.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C assists your body in the production of an important protein called collagen -- used to help make skin and muscles. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, low levels of vitamin C in your body may result in dry, scaly and rough skin, which can result in itchy skin. In addition, vitamin C also neutralizes damage from UV rays, which can harm your skin cells and tissues. Vitamin C sources include: oranges, spinach, blueberries, turnip greens, pineapple and grapefruit.
