Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil from the Australian tea tree, comes recommended as a good topical anti-acne herbal treatment by the University of Michigan Health System. The system reports that the oil should come in a base that offers a concentration of approximately 5 percent tea tree oil. Although this herbal treatment doesn't work as fast as chemical acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide, the university states that it is more gentle and, over the long term, can be more effective overall.

Vitamin A

Retinoids, which are synthetic version of vitamin A, help to clear and treat varying levels of acne, including severe acne, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. The vitamin can be applied topically in the form of a cream or serum, or taken orally. Typically, effective concentrations of the vitamin are only available in prescription form through your dermatologist. He or she will prescribe an oral pill or topical treatment that contains the right dosage for your level of acne.


Guggul, also known as mukul myrrh or by its scientific name --- Commiphora mukul --- is a thorny Indian herb. It contains natural levels of ketonic steroids. When orally ingested, the University of Michigan Health System reports that it can have the same antibacterial effects on acne as synthetic oral antibiotics traditionally used to treat blemishes, such as tetracycline. The university notes that you would need to take 500mg of the herb two times a day. Consult your physician before taking this or any other herbal remedy.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E works as a powerful antioxidant to help defend and repair your skin. It can help accelerate the healing of your existing blemishes, and Brown University even suggests its use to help heal and repair scars from old acne problems. Several skincare products contain vitamin E oil for topical use, while standard vitamin E capsules can be used if you'd like to take it orally.
