Those who do not take the proper care of their skin may experience dry, brittle, cracking or flaky skin. It may also lead to itchy and infected conditions which can be painful. Fortunately, there are a variety of vitamins, minerals and supplements which can help keep your skin healthy, strong and hydrated.

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, also called nicotinic acid, is one of the eight vitamins and is responsible for helping the body convert food into fuel for the body to burn off. Vitamin B3 helps in keeping the hair, skin and eyes healthy. It ensures that the nervous system is functioning properly. It also helps the body in making various sex and other stress-related hormones. All B vitamins are water-soluble, and as a result, they are not stored in the body. It is rare for anybody to develop a deficiency in vitamin B3, but it is possible. A condition known as pellagra may result from not having enough vitamin B3 and can lead to dry, cracked and scaly skin, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Vitamin H

Vitamin H, also called biotin, is part of B group of vitamins. It helps to metabolize proteins and fats. It also keeps the hair and skin healthy and hydrated. Biotin is important during pregnancy as it promotes normal embryonic growth. A lack of vitamin H in the body is rare but can occur, and may lead to a variety of symptoms such as hair loss, dry scaly skin, cracking in the corners of the mouth, a painful tongue and loss of appetite, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that contains antioxidant properties. It exists in eight different forms of isomers. According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin E has been proposed to treat and prevent numerous health conditions, such as cancer and heart disease. A deficiency in vitamin E is rare. The Northwestern Health Sciences University says that vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can help improve the skins overall texture and also assist in reducing the appearance of wrinkles on the face. It is also an important vitamin as it helps other vitamins in the body work more efficiently.
