Vitamin Treatment for Skin Acne

Overview

The American Academy of Dermatology says that acne is a common skin condition, affecting nearly 40 to 50 million Americans every year. Teenagers and young adults are prone to acne, but anybody can experience it. Luckily, there is a selection of vitamins you consume on a daily basis that may help to treat your acne.

Causes

Although the exact causes of acne are unknown, research has found that its formation involves inflammation, excess oil, bacteria and clogged pores. Excess oil occurs due to an increase in the production of sebum, a natural oil made by your body. Excess sebum clogs your pores, trapping bacteria and causing inflammation.

Zinc

Zinc is a mineral found in every cell in your body. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, zinc has been used since ancient times to help enhance the healing of wounds. Zinc contains antioxidant properties, helping to combat molecules called free radicals, which can potentially cause damage. Zinc helps to heal tissues that are damaged and also prevents acne scarring. In addition, zinc helps to control the activity of your oil glands, which can treat acne.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin, helping to fight off free radicals. Vitamin C is needed to grow and repair tissues in your body, while also helping to produce the protein collagen, which is used to make skin, scar tissue, blood vessels and muscles. Vitamin C works with bioflavonoids to help treat acne by enhancing immunity and having an antibacterial effect, according to the Vitamin & Nutrition Center.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that works with carotenoids to help keep the tissue of your skin firm. Vitamin A prevents the formation of acne by reducing sebum production. Also, vitamin A aids in your body's way of handling oxidative stress, which can cause acne in some people.
