Using B5 to Help Acne


Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid or dexpanthenol, is found in living cells as coenzyme A, which facilitates many processes and reactions in the body. According to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a deficiency of B5 rarely occurs, mainly because it is widely available in many different foods. Supplemental vitamin B5 however, has demonstrated the ability to speed up wound healing and produce stronger scar tissue. In addition, a 1995 paper published by Hong Kong Central Hospital suggests that a deficiency of B5 can lead to the development of acne.

Step 1

Take a B5 supplement daily. According to MedlinePlus, vitamin B5 supplements are generally taken in doses of 5 to 10mg daily. Vitamin B5 may be labeled pantothenic acid rather than vitamin B5, but they are identical. A 1985 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that supplemental vitamin B5 helped wounds in animal subjects to heal faster. Acne is often accompanied by infection and inflammation, causing small individual wounds in the affected areas. Accelerating wound healing may be effective in clearing some forms of inflammatory acne.

Step 2

Consume foods that are rich in vitamin B5. Foods such as yogurt, egg yolks and broccoli are all high in B5. Because vitamin B5 is water soluble, it does not build up in the body and has no known level of toxicity. Foods that contain B5 also generally contain other important nutrients, especially other B vitamins, which all play a role in many of the body's processes including metabolism and creating new red blood cells.

Step 3

Maintain good hygiene. Washing the affected areas with an antibacterial soap or acne cleanser twice a day can help deter dirt and slough off oil that can clog pores, which can lead to new acne. Always use a clean washcloth to cleanse the skin gently with warm water and use a new clean cloth to pat the areas dry.

Step 4

Apply dexpanthenol 2 percent cream to the affected area twice a day, 15 minutes after cleansing. Dexpanthenol is a topical form of vitamin B5 that is available over the counter at your local pharmacy. This product has been found to be effective in helping heal wounds such as those caused by inflammatory or infected acne. Dexpanthenol can interact with certain prescription medications, so talk with your dermatologist before using this product. Side effects of dexpanthenol are generally mild and can include irritation, redness and itching.
