Tricks to Help Acne Clear

Tricks to Help Acne Clear Tricks to Help Acne Clear

Acne is more than a nuisance--it can interfere with your life. But just because you have a few spots, doesn't mean you have to hide until they go away. You can implement several tricks to clear your acne for good, but be mindful that it will take time and persistence to see positive results.

Use Creams Twice a Day

Use an over-the-counter acne treatment to clear up your acne. Apply it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Look for products that contain benzoyl peroxide, which is one of the most effective acne-fighting ingredients because it reduces oil production and dries up acne. Or, choose a product with salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores. A concentration of 5 percent is as effective as higher concentrations. Continue using the acne product to keep the acne away for good.

Use Gentle Cosmetics

Using harsh makeup products can contribute to acne for some. That's why the American Academy of Dermatology recommends you use noncomedogenic makeup products, which means they won't clog pores. Anything you put on your face should note that it is oil-free and won't clog pores, including foundation, powder, blush, moisturizer and sunscreen. While switching cosmetics may not get rid of your acne, it can help prevent new blemishes from forming or help prevent irritating your current blemishes.

Wash Your Hair Daily

Oily hair can contribute to acne blemishes, especially on the cheeks and along the jawline. Washing your hair each day removes oils, so they won't contaminate your skin and cause new blemishes to form. Tie your hair back away from your face to further prevent oil contamination.

Avoid Touching Your Face

Keep your hands off your face so your acne clears faster. Touching your face all the time introduces oil, dirt and bacteria into your skin, which can cause new blemishes to form or worsen ones you already have. Make it a conscious habit to keep your hands away--don't even lean on them--and your acne will clear up faster.

Stay Out of the Sun

While soaking up some rays can feel nice, it can worsen your acne. Sun damage boosts oil production in your skin, leading to further breakouts. It can also make your current blemishes appear darker and more prominent. Even worse, many acne creams make you more sensitive to the sun, making damage even more likely. Wear an oil-free sunscreen every day to prevent excess sun exposure and to speed your acne's healing.

Use a Moisturizer

Many acne creams dry out your skin and leave it peeling, flaking, red and irritated. Over-drying your skin in the course of acne treatment can cause your skin to produce more oil and lead to more acne. To combat this, use an oil-free moisturizer each morning and evening to restore moisture to your skin and to soothe any acne treatment-related irritation.
