According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Acne is caused by the pores of the skin becoming clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. If you want to cure acne, you need to develop a good skin care routine.

Don't Scrub

If you want to get rid of acne, wash your face gently with a mild face wash and lukewarm water. When you scrub at the skin, you irritate the area and may make the condition worse. You may use your hands to cleanse the face as long as they have been washed first.

Oils from the Hair

Oils from the hair may transfer onto the skin and clog the pores. Keep your hair pulled back and out of the face. Shampoo the hair at least once a day to reduce the amount of oil in your mane. Do not wear hats since they can block the pores at the hairline and lead to breakouts in that area. Hair care products, such as gels, mousse and hairspray should be applied away from the face, since they can cause acne, according to the Teens Health website sponsored by the Nemours Foundation.

Over-the-Counter Acne Solutions

Topical products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are available to treat acne and prevent future breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide gets rid of acne causing bacteria while salicylic acid controls oil and sheds dead skin cells. Apply the topical acne product twice a day to cure the condition. It may take as long as four to eight weeks to cure active acne.

Greasy Foods

Although eating foods such as chocolate, does not necessarily cause acne, eating oily foods may leave behind oil on the face. When vegetable oil from fried and oily foods gets on the skin, your acne may worsen, states the American Academy of Dermatology.
