Treatments for Younger Skin
As you get older, collagen and elastin in your skin begin to weaken and the fat that once plumped your skin starts to dwindle, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The result: loose skin that sags downward. Increasingly wrinkled skin is normal over time, but it can cause you to look older than you feel. If you want to get rid of your wrinkles, a variety of treatments can give you younger looking skin.
Retinoic acid creams are medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to safely and effectively improve the skin's texture and increase collagen production, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Because these prescription creams can make the skin more susceptible to burning, you would need to take extra precautions to shield your skin, according to MayoClinic.com. Retinoic acid can also cause side effects such as dryness, tingling, burning and redness, says MayoClinic.com.
Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion
Dermabrasion treatments involve the use of a rotating brush to sand down the top layer of skin so that a new layer can grow in, according to MayoClinic.com. Skin needs to heal for a few weeks after the procedure; in the mean time, you can expect swelling, redness and some scabbing, says MayoClinic.com. Microdermabrasion involves the use of a vacuum suction and exfoliating crystals to remove a fine layer of skin; its effects are generally temporary and more subtle than effects of dermabrasion, according to MayoClinic.com.
Injections of fillers such as fat and collagen can even out permanent creases such as frown and squint lines, says the American Academy of Dermatology. Alternately, and injection of Clostridium botulinum -- also known as Botox -- can cause the small muscles in the face to relax, which gets rid of unwanted facial creases for about 3 to 4 months, according to MedlinePlus.
In a chemical peel, a doctor applies an acid solution to the skin to burn the top layer and allow fresh skin to fill in its spot, according to MayoClinic.com. Chemicals can be applied to different depths. A medium depth peel removes all of the top layer of skin and some of the underlying layer and a superficial peel only removes a portion of the top layer, says MayoClinic.com. You would need a series of superficial peels to see results.
An ablative laser resurfacing treatment involves using a laser beam to destroy the top layer of skin and heat the layer beneath it to stimulate growth of new collagen, according to MayoClinic.com. Alternately, a nonablative laser treatment uses lasers that are less intense to heat up the bottom layer of skin and cause new collagen and elastin to form, says MayoClinic.com. Whereas nonablative laser treatments can reduce early signs of aging such as fine lines, ablative treatments are more effective in tightening the skin and reducing deep lines, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Facelifts are invasive as they involve cutting into the skin to remove excess skin and fat in the lower face and neck and sometimes tightening the muscle and connective tissue that lies beneath it, according to MayoClinic.com. This surgery's results last for up to 10 years but facial swelling and bruising may linger for weeks after the procedure, warns MayoClinic.com.
