If you find commercial acne products too drying or irritating, leaving your skin feeling tight and red, consider using essential oils to treat breakouts. Essential oils are extracted from plants, flowers and herbs and can have beneficial properties as cited in several studies published by the National Institutes of Health. Do a skin patch test before using any essential oil to make sure you are not allergic. Dab a drop on your skin--most people use the inside of their elbows--and cover it with a bandage for 24 hours. If you have any skin reactions, cleanse the test area and don't use the product.

Skin Cleanser with Lavender, Lemon, Chamomile Oils

Make your own skin cleanser from jojoba oil mixed with lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), chamomile and lemon essential oils. Combine 4 oz. jojoba oil with 20 drops of each of the essential oils. Pour 1 to 2 tbsp. into your palm and lightly slather it over your face and neck. Run a clean washcloth run under warm water and wring it out, then use it to gently blot the cleanser from your skin. Jojoba oil is a plant wax that provides moisture and does not strip skin like soaps can.

Tea Tree Oil Astringent

Help control oily skin and acne by using tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) as an astringent. Extracted from a tree native to Australia, tea tree oil is also used in many holistic skincare products. After cleansing your face, dab the tea tree oil directly on pimples to help dry them out. Add 4 or 5 drops of tea tree oil to 1 tbsp. water in a small bowl. Soak clean cotton balls in this solution and sweep them over clean skin to remove dead skin cells.

Moisturize with Clary Sage, Lavender and Rosemary Oils

Moisturize your skin with sweet almond oil mixed with clary sage, lavender and rosemary essential oils. Combine 4 oz. sweet almond oil with 20 drops of each essential oil. Lavender is calming for sensitive skin and rosemary oil has antibacterial qualities, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Pour 1 to 2 tablespoons in your palm and lightly apply to your face and neck. You may find this is a heavier moisturizer that is best used at night before going to sleep.
