Overview

Enlarged pores can allow acne-causing bacteria and impurities to infect your skin. To reduce and prevent further acne breakouts, apply treatments that shrink your pores. Know which treatments are the most effective, how long it takes to shrink your pores and what to do if you have side effects.

Flushing Pores

Flushing your pores prevents bacteria and impurities from clogging your skin, and allows pores to shrink back down to their original size. In order to flush out pores, a non-comedogenic oil such as castor oil should be applied to the skin and massaged in for at least three minutes. Fill a bowl with steaming water and lean 18 inches over the water. Drape a towel over your head to make the steam billow over your face, which opens pores to flush out oils and impurities. After five minutes, wipe off your skin with a wet washcloth.

Exfoliating Pores

Exfoliating your face removes dead skin and excess oils that could clog your skin and enlarge pores. Exfoliation involves massaging a mildly abrasive substance on your skin, which physically rubs off skin and impurities that are covering and clogging your pores. Use an exfoliant that's gentle and doesn't scratch your skin, such as baking soda. To apply a baking soda exfoliant, combine 1 tbsp. baking soda with 1 tsp. water, and massage it gently on your skin for two minutes. Move your fingers in circular motions, then rinse your skin with warm water.

Effects

Flushing out and exfoliating pores allows them to be free of blockages, and enables pores to shrink to their regular size. Once pores are small and tight, they're less likely to become clogged with impurities and produce acne.

Warning

If your skin reacts poorly to the application of castor oil or baking soda, resulting in redness, itching, or burning, discontinue using them and consult your dermatologist.

Expert Insight

Apply a pore flush and a baking soda exfoliant twice per day until your pores are no longer enlarged, then reduce the frequency to once per week to maintain the smaller size of your pores.
