Acne affects 90 percent of all Americans, most often during their teen years but also well into their adulthood, reports the University of Michigan's health services. Besides twice-daily washing, the university suggests trying one of the many over-the-counter topical creams designed to treat the skin condition. For the fastest results, choose a topical lotion that's been reviewed and found effective by skincare experts.

Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer

Skincare expert Paula Begoun put Aveeno's facial cream through her tests and says it's enticing to any individual "suffering from bouts of dryness and breakouts." It's formulated with acne-banishing salicylic acid in a moisturizing cream base. Begoun says the cream has just the right pH level to allow the acid to work properly. It also contains soy extract and silicone to gently moisturize your skin.

Patricia Wexler M.D. Acne Spot Treatment

Patricia Wexler's acne cream was called a "powerful" way to fight acne, according to the editors of Women's Health magazine. It combines two effective acne-targeting chemicals: benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. The latter helps exfoliate your skin to keep your pores unclogged and clear, while the benzoyl peroxide kills the actual bacteria organisms that cause acne.

L'Oreal Paris Blemish-Fighting Lotion

L'Oreal's acne cream is part of its Acne Response Daily kit. Begoun calls it a "nonirritating, fragrance-free lotion." This makes it perfect for acne-afflicted, sensitive skin. It's also made with benzoyl peroxide at a strength of 2.5 percent, which Begoun says is an "effective option to kill acne-causing bacteria." The combination of moisturizers with the peroxide helps keep your skin from drying out too much.

Neutrogena Overnight Acne Control Lotion

Neutrogena labels its acne control lotion for night use, but Begoun says it can be used as part of your daytime routine. She likes its use of benzoyl peroxide, saying it does a good job of disinfecting the skin's surface to treat blemishes. It's also formulated without irritating substances like fragrances, thus helping to avoid aggravating any existing pimple inflammations.
