Mild to moderate acne is often treated with over the counter acne products that do not require a prescription from a doctor or dermatologist. Finding an acne treatment that works with your body chemistry can be a challenging task, but looking at the active ingredients of each product can help you determine which kinds of products are effective where others are not.

Daily Facial Routine: Clinique Acne Solutions with Clearing Concealer

Winner of the Cosmo Beauty Award for Acne Treatment, the Clinique Acne Solutions cleansing foam, clarifying lotion and moisturizer are a complete acne treatment that can help treat current acne problems, while also preventing breakouts on acne-prone skin. The facial soap comes packaged as cleansing foam, containing a 2 percent concentration of salicylic acid. Clinique’s Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion contains 1.5 percent salicylic acid. As an active ingredient in acne products, salicylic acid stops pores from becoming clogged by slowing down the shedding of skin cells in hair follicles, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. The Clinique system also offers an optional Acne Solutions Clearing Concealer, which works like a typical makeup concealer to cover up blemishes; however, it is medicated with salicylic acid to help treat the affected area.

Emergency Spot Treatment: Neutrogena Rapid Clear Fight & Fade Gel

For unexpected breakouts or concentrated places on your body that acne is really hard to fight, a spot treatment may be a very effective weapon against acne trouble spots. The Neutrogena Rapid Clear Fight & Fade 2-in-1 Gel uses a combination of salicylic acid and glycolic acid to remove blemishes and also help prevent the appearance of acne scars. While Neutrogena recommends using the gel in combination with its own acne treatment system, it can be used in combination with another acne facial routine or system, making it a valuable add-on product.

Hypoallergenic Acne Treatment: GoClear

For those with sensitive skin or allergies, a hypoallergenic acne treatment is necessary to avoid unpleasant rashes or complications that can make acne worse. GoClear products are all oil-free, artificial dye-free, fragrance-free and they do not contain other potentially irritating ingredients such as alcohol, PABA or lanolin. GoClear’s product line is also made without using the acne treatment ingredient benzoyl peroxide. Although benzoyl peroxide is often quite effective, it can be harsh for those with sensitive skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, benzoyl peroxide can cause redness, excessive dryness, scaling and burning. Overall, the GoClear product line was developed to treat people of varying skin tones and types. As reported by Seventeen magazine, a clinical trial showed that 97 percent of the people who tried GoClear had fewer blemishes.
