Acne can be an emotionally distressing condition. It is often caused by hormone imbalances, which is why it's so common among teenagers. However, many adults suffer from acne as well. It was once believed that eating certain foods like chocolate caused acne breakouts, but we now know this is not the case. Instead, there are certain minerals that can naturally lessen acne breakouts.

Selenium

When combined with vitamins E and A, selenium can successfully treat acne according to AcneTeam.com. Selenium is found in tuna fish, shrimp, mushrooms, eggs and orange juice. Nuts, sunflower seeds, olives and olive oil are sources of vitamin E. Vitamin A is found in spinach, sweet potatoes and carrots. Most multivitamins contain a day's worth of all three of these elements, but it is easier for our bodies to absorb vitamins and minerals from natural food sources.

It should take about 12 weeks to see results. Never consume more than 400mcg of selenium daily, as too much causes hair loss, depression, nausea and anxiety. People using selenium to treat acne should talk to their doctor about how much is right for them.

Magnesium

When our bodies are stressed, they produce excess hormones which often lead to acne breakouts. According to an MIT research paper by Mark London titled, The Role of Magnesium in Fibromyalgia, magnesium regulates the production of stress hormones. Therefore, magnesium may be more beneficial at treating adult acne as that's more often attributed to stress than teenage acne. Magnesium is found in whole grain breads and pastas as well as spinach and bananas.

Zinc

Zinc reduces inflammation, which may improve the appearance of acne nodules and scars. According to the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements, males 14 years of age and older should consume 14mg of zinc daily. Girls between the ages of 14 and 18 should consume 9mg, and women over 18 should consume 8mg of zinc per day. Zinc is found in oysters, beans, nuts, red meat and poultry.

Copper

Copper peptides in lotions can help smooth skin made rough by acne and acne scars, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. As an added bonus, it also helps fight wrinkles and other signs of premature aging. Copper supplements are available, but many people find they induce nausea and cause a number of other unpleasant side effects. For a milder approach, try a facial lotion or sun block that contains copper.
