Your skin plays an important role in the overall homeostasis (balance) of your entire body. For example, your skin helps regulate the body's internal temperature, prevents invasion from harmful pathogens and microorganisms, and acts as a sensory organ that allows you to feel the surrounding environment. Because the skin is so important, it is crucial to take care of it, especially areas of the skin that are the most exposed to your environment, such as your face.

Moisturize

One way to help protect your facial skin is to regularly use a facial moisturizer or lotion. Moisturizers and lotions help keep the cells of the skin hydrated and also help reduce the amount of moisture lost from the skin over time. The skin needs continuous moisture to work at its optimal capacity.

Sun

Wearing sun screen is another important way to protect your facial skin. The sun emits rays of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can accelerate the aging process of the skin and can even manipulate the skin cells, resulting in the formation of skin cancer. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when spending time in the sun, you should always protect your skin with at least an SPF 15 sunscreen. Also, seek shade or stay inside during the sun's peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. since this also helps reduce the sun's damaging effects on the skin.

Smoking

Smoking can also have devastating effects on the skin. According to the Nemours Foundation, the nicotine in cigarettes constricts the blood vessels impairing the blood flow to your skin. The skin relies on the blood for oxygen and essential nutrients in order to thrive. Without adequate oxygen and nutrients the skin prematurely ages, wrinkles and sags. Smoking cessation protects the skin by preventing these side effects from occurring.

Diet

Your diet can also affect the health of your skin. Eating a diet full of healthy fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins can provide the necessary nutrients for the skin to remain healthy. A poor diet high in processed and fat-filled foods robs the body and the skin of these nutrients, leading to less healthy skin.
