Blackheads are caused by accumulations of sebum in the pores of your skin. This oily substance is secreted by oil glands in the pores, and helps keep your skin healthy and moisturized. Sebum can also form blockages in the pores, preventing the flow of oil onto the skin. As the oil becomes exposed to the air, it oxidizes and turns black, forming a blackhead. These can be unsightly, but there are several things you can do to eliminate blackheads.

Apply Retinoids

Some retinoids are available over-the-counter, while stronger medications must be obtained through a prescription. Retinoids are very strong skin exfoliants that help eliminate dead skin cells, open pores and break down clogged oil. Dead skin cells can help promote the development of blackheads by trapping oil in the pores. The act of opening your pores can also loosen up the blackheads around the edges, making them easier to break down and dislodge.

Use Blackhead Strips

These are a very popular and inexpensive approach to removing blackheads, and as far as the visibility of the clogs, it can be very effective. Blackhead strips work by adhering to the top of the blackhead and ripping the clog out of the pore. However, these strips many times only remove the top part of the blackhead. While this eliminates the visible black portion of the oil blockage, it doesn't clear out the rest of the pore, meaning more oil will take its place and gradually form a new blackhead. Still, blackhead strips can be very effective when you need a fast fix to your skin problems.

Keep Towels Clean

Dirty towels can introduce more grime and oil to your skin, and if you reuse them multiple times, you could just be applying your own skin's oil back onto your face after a bath or shower. Use a clean towel every time you dry off your face to reduce the contaminants interacting with your skin and clogging your pores.

Heat Face Before Treatments

Heat causes your pores to dilate, becoming wider and reducing the pressure on the sides of your blackheads. If you are trying a treatment to remove blackheads, such as blackhead strips or a mask, heat your skin in a sauna or using a hot compress prior to these treatments. This will make it easier for the blackheads to be pulled out completely.
