Acne can make you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable in your own skin. Even though you have acne, it doesn't mean you have to live with it. You can use several methods to get rid of your acne fast and return your skin to its normal clarity. The good news is, you won't have to resort to extreme treatments to get the results you want, in most cases.

Wash Your Face Twice a Day

Thoroughly cleanse your skin twice a day with a gentle face wash. Look for formulas that are alcohol-free, don't have sodium lauryl sulfate and are made for sensitive skin, to reduce potential irritation. Don't scrub. Instead, massage the cleanser into your damp skin then rinse well. If you weren't regularly cleansing your skin before, you should notice a difference in your skin's appearance within four weeks.

Use Acne Cream Daily

Use over-the-counter acne creams, once a day, to treat your acne. This might sound self-explanatory, but OTC creams can be effective in curing acne, especially products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Look for concentrations of 5 percent--more than enough to kill acne bacteria without over-drying your skin. You will need to continue using these creams to maintain the results, which should be apparent within six to eight weeks.

Use a Moisturizer to Prevent Flaking

Though you want to dry out acne lesions, it's important not to over dry your skin. Using acne creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can zap your skin of its natural moisture, causing the production of excess oil. This leads to additional acne breakouts unless you use of an oil-free moisturizer twice a day.

Don't Touch Your Face

Keep your hands away from your face. Your hands contain dirt, oil and bacteria, all of which contribute to acne breakouts. Picking at pimples or even leaning on your hand can introduce bacteria into your skin, prolonging blemishes and causing new ones to develop.

Seek Medical Advice

If your acne does not improve or clear up with over-the-counter treatments, seek the advice of a dermatologist. She can prescribe stronger topical or oral medications to dry up excess oil, kill acne bacteria and improve the overall condition of your skin. Ask about the side effects of these treatments to ensure your chosen method is best for you.
