The Mayo Clinic warns against washing it more than twice a day.

Hair hanging over your face or clothing covering your body can lead to acne outbreaks. Keep your hair tied back and don't wear hats that fit tightly. Acne.org advises wearing cotton to increase air circulation against your skin and changing your clothes if they get sweaty. Avoid tight-fitting items and things that rub against your skin, as the Mayo Clinic states these things can aggravate your pimples.

Touching

Avoid touching your pimples, the Mayo Clinic advises. Never scratch, pick or pop them as this can lead to infections and scarring. Leave them alone, even if they hurt or itch.

Make-Up

Heavy foundation make-up may worsen acne, so the Mayo Clinic recommends using powder cosmetics instead of thick, creamy products. All make-up should be thoroughly removed before bedtime so it cannot set up the right conditions for new outbreaks by clogging your pores overnight. The Acne.com information site advises using non-comedogenic make-up, which is specially formulated to help prevent acne.

Diet

The Mayo Clinic states you do not have to worry about avoiding greasy foods or chocolate because there is no scientific evidence linked them to acne. There may be a link between pimples and starchy foods, according to Mayo, so it is wise to avoid items like breads, potato chips and bagels. These foods may trigger acne because of the way they affect your blood sugar levels.

Talk to a doctor if over-the-counter products and home acne prevention tips are not properly controlling your outbreaks. Severe untreated acne can hurt your self esteem and eventually lead to scars. Doctors can offer many options like stronger creams and gels or oral medications.
