The Secret to Good Skin The Secret to Good Skin The Secret to Good Skin

Good skin is the result of heredity, as well as care for your skin and your overall health. Behaviors such as too much alcohol consumption and not enough sleep can damage your skin. The same is true for smoking, which restricts the blood flow in the surface of the skin and robs the skin of elastin, which helps keep it looking young. If you follow some good skin health advice and engage in behaviors that should keep you healthy all over, you should see the results in the mirror every day.

Getting and maintaining good skin usually means treating it gently. The Mayo Clinic website advises warm showers instead of hot because hot water removes oil from the skin and contributes to a drying out of the skin. Likewise, strong soaps can rob the skin of oil. And if you have dry skin, find a moisturizer and use it regularly. Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type may take some trial and error, so you may want to talk with a dermatologist for advice. A variety of products are available for dry skin, oily skin and combination skin, so read labels carefully about which products are right for your particular skin type.

Sun damage is one of the most common obstacles in maintaining good skin. But it's also one of the most preventable. Putting on a sunscreen with a high SPF factor can not only help prevent skin cancer from developing, but it can help prevent the premature aging effects of too much sun exposure. An SPF of at least 15 is recommended. And for maximum effectiveness, apply the sunscreen about half an hour before going out in the sun or going in the water.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables can be helpful for the skin-healthy nutrients they provide in your diet, as well as some of the benefits they can offer when used as part of topical treatments. For example, the silica in cucumbers is helpful in maintaining healthy connective tissue throughout the body and for preserving a youthful and healthy complexion. The water-based cucumbers can also be key ingredient in topical moisturizers and other products aimed at reducing puffiness around the eyes and smoothing out wrinkles. Likewise, fruits packed with vitamin C can help give your skin a glow and may help lower the odds of acne problems, the Mayo Clinic advises.

Contrary to some long-held beliefs, acne is not necessarily caused by poor hygiene or diet. While keeping your face clean and treating acne outbreaks with over-the-counter or prescription skin treatments can help keep your complexion clear, it appears pimples are caused by an overproduction of oil called sebrum; excess of bacteria; irritation of hair follicles, caused by an irregular shedding of skin cells, according to the Mayo Clinic. Hormones may have much to do with the triggers of acne. And strenuous cleaning and scrubbing of the face can actually irritate the skin and make acne worse.

Many behaviors can have have damaging effects on skin. Smoking, for example, and too much sun exposure without sunscreen, or an effective sunscreen, are well-known as anti-skin behaviors. A diet with too much sodium can also take away from your natural beauty. Managing stress well can lower the levels of stress hormones in the body, which contribute to inflammation and unhealthy skin.
