The Pros & Cons of DDF Acne Products

The Pros & Cons of DDF Acne Products The Pros & Cons of DDF Acne Products

Overview

Acne has plagued teenagers for centuries, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality estimates that almost all teens get pimples in any given year. Acne remedies abound, and you may have heard of DDF acne products from Doctor's Dermatologic Formula. These over-the-counter products may help you clear your acne, but you'll likely pay more for them than you would for some other acne-fighting products.

Significance

Acne stems from your sebaceous glands, which sometimes produce more sebum, or oil, than you need to lubricate your skin, according to the Cleveland Clinic. This excess oil settles into your pores, where it causes clogs and provides a home for bacteria to grow. Bacteria in acne can cause inflammation and bad infection, potentially leading to larger pimples and eventually scarring.

Features

DDF produces eight different acne products: Acne Control Treatment, Acne Scrub, Benzoyl Peroxide Gel, Blemish Foaming Cleanser, Glycolic Exfoliating Oil Control Gel, Mattifying Oil Control, Salicylic Wash and Sulfur Therapeutic Mask. Most contain one or more proven acne-fighting ingredients.

Function

Benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient in DDF's Acne Scrub and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel, fights acne by helping to kill the bacteria that causes inflammation and infection in the skin condition, according to the website Drugs. Salicylic acid, found in DDF's Acne Control Treatment, Blemish Foaming Cleanser, Salicylic Wash and Exfoliating Oil Control Gel, fights pore blockages by causing your skin to peel. Sulfur, found in DDF's Sulfur Therapeutic Mask, works in a similar fashion to salicylic acid.

Effects

DDF products and all other over-the-counter acne medications can cause some side effects, including those containing benzoyl peroxide, sulfur and salicylic acid, according to the Mayo Clinic. Skin irritation, peeling, flakiness and redness commonly occur when you're starting treatment with these products, although these side effects typically taper off within the first month or two.

Considerations

There is no evidence that DDF's acne products work any better or any worse than other products on the market containing the same active ingredients. The DDF products are priced higher than acne control products you might find at your local drugstore; for example, the DDF Salicylic Acid Acne Medication carries a list price of $42 for 1.7 oz. Since no one acne remedy works for everyone, you'll need to decide for yourself if DDF acne products are right for you.
