The Proper Way to Get Rid of Blackheads
Blackheads are the result of overproduction of sebum, the skin's natural oil. When sebum combines with dead skin cells and oils from cosmetics and moisturizers, pores can become clogged. The clog then oxidizes, resulting in the dark color of blackheads. While squeezing blackheads may seem tempting, it can lead to scarring. Blackheads are common on the nose, forehead and chin. They may also occur on the back and chest, where there are lots of sebaceous glands. If left untreated, blackheads can cause the pores to enlarge.
Wash your face with an exfoliating cleanser and very warm water. If you prefer, you can use a gentle glycerin soap and a facial scrubbing sponge or washcloth.
Mix 1 teaspoon epsom salt, 3 drops of iodine and 1 cup of boiling water. When the solution has cooled enough to stick your finger in, saturate a few cotton balls with it and apply to affected areas. Repeat several times, reheating the solution if necessary. This loosens blackheads and makes them soft enough to remove.
Squeeze blackheads gently with a blackhead removal tool. Removal tools may be as simple as a metal loop with a handle or as complex as a suction device.
Apply a salicylic acid toner to dry up any excess oil remaining in the pores.
Keep your skin as clean as possible. You can use the salicylic acid toner daily if it's not too drying. Remove all traces of makeup every evening with oil-free cleanser and follow with a cold water rinse to close the pores.
