Around 80 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 suffer from some type of acne, while 20 percent of adults still have acne, according the Acne Resource Center Online. Acne is caused by a number of factors, including genetics, stress, environmental pollutants, prescribed medications and physical irritation of the skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, acne typically appears on the face, shoulders, chest and back.

Acne Lesions

Acne lesions--commonly known as zits or pimples--are the most common effect of acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. These lesions can vary in shape, severity or size. Whiteheads and blackheads occur when hair follicles become clogged. They can be blocked by oil secretions, bacteria or dead skin cells. Nodules are painful bumps beneath the surface of the skin. Cysts are painful lumps filled with pus that can cause scars.

Scarring

Acne can leave scarring on the affected areas. This scarring can be either temporary or permanent, according to the Mayo Clinic. Severe acne scarring can leave visible marks on the individual for her entire life. The Mayo Clinic notes that there are treatments used to lessen the scaring caused by acne. Dermabrasion removes the top layer of skin and is effective in removing superficial scars. Laser treatments can help lessen scars by getting rid of the top layers of skin and promoting new healthy skin growth.
