Almost no one gets through life without dealing with pimples. These blemishes on your skin can occur for several reasons and result in swelling and inflammation, often developing a whitehead filled with pus. Pimples can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, and may cause individuals who have them to feel self-conscious. But there are many things you can do to get rid of a few pesky pimples.

Over-the-Counter Treatments

If your pimples are an isolated outbreak and not resulting from chronic skin problems, it's likely you can fix your problem with simple over-the-counter medications. The can be found at grocery and drug stores and work in different ways, depending on the specific treatment. Products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid typically treat pimples by eliminating oil and dead skin cells from the skin, which can clog pores and increase the risk of infections that result in pimples. These products may also cause skin irritation, dryness and/or flaking, according to the Mayo Clinic, but this is not a significant problem if the products are only used short-term to eliminate isolated pimples.

If your pimples are moderate to severe, they could be caused by a bacterial infection in the skin. This infection may be difficult for your skin to fight on its own, which can lead to persistent acne. In this scenario, antibiotics are a treatment option you can get through your doctor. These antibiotics are often taken orally and will reduce the presence of the offending bacteria while also treating inflammation in your skin. Antibiotics can cause some health problems, such as diarrhea, due to the unintended killing off of good bacteria in your digestive tract, and are typically only used short term until you get results in your skin.

Cosmetic Treatments

Several simple cosmetic treatments can help treat pimples of varying severities. Chemical peels are a simple procedure done in a doctor's or dermatologist's office and use a chemical---such as glycolic acid---to peel the top layer of skin, oil and dirt included. Chemical peels are often used in conjunction with other treatments, such as over-the-counter remedies. Microdermabrasion is another effective method that works by eliminating small layers of the epidermis. It works well when trying to eliminate dead skin cells that are exacerbating your pimples. These treatments are usually used sparingly and have some slight short-term side effects, such as sensitive skin and skin discoloration.
