The Best Way to Wash Your Face With Acne
Keeping your face clean helps remove excess oils and dead skin cells that can encourage acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatologists. Acne-prone skin requires special care and washing it improperly can actually make the problem worse. While cleansing your face often won’t clear up acne completely, it is the first step in a skin care routine that can help you banish blemishes. Talk to your dermatologist if over-the-counter acne treatments and proper washing fail to control your breakouts. Moderate to severe acne often responds best to prescription-strength medications and creams.
Wash your face with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser if you have trouble with acne. Face washes with harsh chemicals and fragrances can dry out and irritate your skin. Avoid harsh exfoliating washes to minimize your risk of irritation.
Cleanse your face twice a day; once in the morning and once before bed. If you work out or play sports and perspire heavily, wash your face after these activities as well. Washing your skin too often can stimulate the sebaceous glands below your skin’s surface to produce excess oil and make acne worse.

Use lukewarm water to wash your face. Hot water can dry out your skin and worsen the appearance of acne by irritating your skin and making it appear red.
Pat your face dry with a clean towel after washing. Leave some water on your skin. Leaving your skin slightly moist helps it stay hydrated and healthy. Rubbing your skin completely dry can aggravate it.
