Overview

Acne is a skin disorder that is caused when pores in the skin become clogged. Pores are clogged by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells and even hair. Inflammation, redness and swelling can occur on the back where acne is present. Whiteheads, blackheads and even cysts are all different types of acne that can form on the back. Acne commonly occurs during the teenage years; however, it can form at any age from childhood through adulthood. Acne is hereditary and often runs in families. The back is a common place to have acne due to increased oil glands.

Step 1

Avoid wearing tight clothing. Carry a satchel that hangs to the side of the body, and not a backpack.

Step 2

Wash the area once a day using a mild soap. Do not use soap with benzoyl peroxide on the back because the skin will become too dry, and oil production will increase. Use a loofah brush with a handle to reach all areas of the back while bathing or showering.

Step 3

Apply 10 percent benzoyl peroxide to the back. Massage the medication onto areas that show acne one to two times a day. The back has thicker skin and requires increased benzoyl peroxide to properly treat.

Step 4

Examine the back to see if acne is clearing up. Do not pick or squeeze at pimples. Visit with a dermatologist if deep cysts form or if acne is not decreasing. Inquire about additional medications such as oral antibiotics or prescription strength topical creams. Draining of cysts on the back may be necessary.
