Overview

Blackheads, also known as comedones, occur when the skin's pores are clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, bacteria and tiny hairs, according to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. As a result, the trapped matter causes the opening of the pore to appear black. Although there is no magic cure that will cause acne and blackheads to disappear, it is possible to control the condition and to prevent inflammation and permanent scarring. If your blackheads are severe or if your skin is inflamed and painful, discuss the problem with your physician. He may be able to prescribe oral or topical medications.

Step 1

Wash your face once or twice daily, using a cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide, which will exfoliate the skin, remove blackheads, and help to remove bacteria that can clog the pores. Massage the cleanser gently into your skin for three to four minutes. Rinse the cleanser from your skin with warm water, and then pat your face dry with a soft towel.

Step 2

Deep clean your pores and remove blackheads with a hot steam treatment immediately after cleansing your face. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Remove the pot from the heat and allow the water to cool slightly. Create a tent over your head with a large bath towel, and allow the steam to penetrate your skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse your face immediately with tepid water. Repeat the steam treatment twice weekly.

Step 3

Remove blackheads from your nose and forehead with commercial pore strips. Use the strips according to the package directions. Limit your use of these items to twice weekly, as the strips can irritate the skin and make blackheads worse.

Step 4

Use a blackhead extractor to remove large blackheads that remain after the use of other blackhead removal techniques. Sterilize the extractor before use by wiping it with rubbing alcohol, and then place the hole in the tool over the blackhead. Press the extractor gently but firmly to remove the blackhead, and apply a thin layer of antiseptic cream to the affected area.
