Overview

Acne is just a skin condition caused by bacteria and oil clogging your pores, and yet it always seems to know when you have a special event to attend, or need to have your picture taken. Don’t panic. You don’t have to be an expert to cover up pimples. Acne-hiding makeup comes in all forms, but the three most basic are concealer, foundation and powder. Many of these are even available with acne-fighting ingredients right in them. It’s not difficult to cover up acne and keep those zits out of sight.

Step 1

Wash your face with a mild cleanser and warm water. Do not use any kind of scrubber or exfoliant, and make sure the water is not too hot. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

Step 2

Apply an acne fighting moisturizer that contains either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Let it dry completely.

Step 3

Put a tiny bit of concealer onto a clean cotton swab. It’s best to use cotton swabs instead of letting the applicator ever touch your skin because it can carry bacteria into the rest of the tube or bottle.

Step 4

Dot the concealer onto your pimple. Be very gentle so you don’t pop it. If you have several, do them one at a time, using a clean cotton swab for each one. For large patches of acne, put the concealer onto a clean makeup sponge and blot it on, rather than wiping.

Step 5

Tap the edges of the concealer with the ring finger of your nondominant hand to blend it into your skin. This technique is how mimes and clowns get their white makeup on so smoothly.

Step 6

Pour a small amount of liquid foundation onto a clean makeup sponge. Use the sponge to apply the foundation to your face and neck, dotting it on and then blending it. Keep the layer of foundation very thin so that it looks more natural.

Step 7

Dip a clean makeup brush into your loose powder. Powder brushes should be very fat and soft. Gently wiggle or blow on the powder brush to remove excess powder, and then brush it lightly across your face. Pay special attention to your hairline so that you don’t get little clumps of powder caught in your hair.
