The Best Way to Clear Acne Scars

The Best Way to Clear Acne Scars

Overview

As if suffering from acne weren't enough, many people who deal with severe acne end up with acne scars. While some scars can be cleared with time and the application of creams, severe scars may require more invasive treatments like laser resurfacing and even surgery. But the good news is that clearing up acne scars is possible--you don't have to live with them the rest of your life.

Step 1

Treat any acne you might still have. It's important to have your skin completely clear. Acne scar treatments might be for nought if you're just going to develop new scars. Visit a dermatologist to find the best treatment option for you, though in many cases over-the-counter salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide treatments are most effective.

Step 2

Exfoliate your skin every day using an oil-free toner. Opt for a type that contains tea tree oil. This will soothe spots with red marks left behind by old acne and can aid in the healing of scars when used regularly.

Step 3

Use a chemical peel to remove the top layer of skin. Chemical peels come in a variety of strengths, from a mild glycolic acid peel to a stronger phenol peel that can be performed only in a dermatologist's office. Either way, peels work by penetrating the top layers of skin and causing them to slough off. This speeds up the rate at which red marks fade and slightly depressed scars fade. Depending on the strength of the peel, recovery time can vary from none at all to a few weeks.

Step 4

Get a microdermabrasion treatment to soften the edges of deeper scars and eliminate very shallow scars. This treatment uses crystals to basically sand off the top layer of skin.

Step 5

Undergo a stronger treatment like laser resurfacing or excision. These treatments can restore a smoother texture to your skin. Laser treatment works by eliminating the connections between tissue fibers and the top layers of skin (which cause pits); excision involves the use of surgical techniques to remove a scar and stitch up the surrounding skin.
