The Best Time to Put Lotion on Dry Skin
Overview
Dry skin is unsightly and irritating to those who have it, causing itching, flaking and bleeding when scratched too much. If you use lotion, you want the most effective treatment to stop the dryness. Knowing how and when to use lotion is helpful.
After Bathing
Right after you get out of the bath or shower, pat yourself dry and then apply lotion according to Dr. Lisa Benest, a dermatologist. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests putting lotion on within three minutes of a shower. Applying lotion while still damp can create a repellent layer that keeps foreign objects out and moisture sealed in.
Often
If you have very dry skin, lotion needs to be reapplied multiple times. You should put some on every four to six hours for maximum protection. Expecting one application of lotion to thoroughly moisturize your skin, especially in dry climates, is unrealistic.
After Exposure
If you have been out in the sun or wind all day, you need to apply extra moisture to the skin as these environmental hazards wreak havoc. Clean sunscreen off first, and then apply lotion.
Watch Ingredients
There are lotions, creams, balms, oils, salves and ointments. Ingredients are important and affect how effective it is on skin no matter when you put it on. The American Academy of Dermatology states that petrolatum is a good moisturizing ingredient. Consult a dermatologist or skin care specialist for recommendations about lotion ingredients or types.
