People will go to any length to have bright, healthy skin. Millions of dollars are spent each year on dermatologist visits, over-the-counter creams and prescription remedies. In fact, nutrition can have as much of an impact on skin health as the products that people use. Vitamins and anti-oxidants nourish and enrich the skin as well as the rest of the body.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A's primary function is to strengthen skin. Stronger skin can prevent bacterial growth and infections. Bacterial infections which clog skin pores create pimples and increase the production of sebum, or skin oils. Vitamin A also strengthens the immune system, helping the body's response to bacterial and viral infections. In large doses, it is the active ingredient in the anti-acne, anti-wrinkle prescription medications Retin-A and Accutane.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an important immune-boosting supplement and anti-oxidant. It promotes the travel of oxygen through the body and eliminates oxygen-killing free radicals. Oxidized skin looks healthier, because it is well-nourished. Vitamin C also strengthens the connective tissues of the skin, causing the skin to be tighter and reducing wrinkles.

Vitamin D

The body is capable of making its own vitamin D. The body absorbs sunlight and converts the rays into the anti-oxidant. When people refer to someone's "healthy glow," it is the result of skin pigmentation influenced by Vitamin D. The National Institutes of Health warns that older people cannot process Vitamin D as effectively from simple sunlight, requiring supplemental nutrition.

Vitamin K

While Vitamin K does not have a direct effect on the skin, it can help clear up the common problem with dark circles under the eyes. The dark circles are caused by blood pooling from naturally occurring blood vessel breakage. Vitamin K helps blood clot, repairing the capillaries and reducing the blood pools.

Zinc and Copper

These metals a similar effects. Both improve the skins elasticity, firming the skin and reducing wrinkles. Zinc will also lessens sebum production within skin pores, which controls acne inflammations.
