Alpha hydroxy acids work as effective exfoliating chemicals to remove dead skin to unveil the new skin beneath, according to Princeton University's health services. Forms of AHAs include glycolic acid and lactic acid. Many over-the-counter skin care products, including skin cleansers and facial creams, contain AHAs to help improve the clarity and brightness of your complexion.

Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Treatment Cream

Clearasil's treatment cream is a "very good topical disinfectant" for helping to eliminate blemishes on your skin, reports skin care expert Paula Begoun. She notes its efficacious combination of benzoyl peroxide and gluconolactone. The latter is a form of AHA that she says is "helpful for the skin," as it gets rid of topical skin cells. The cream is available in a sheer formula as well as tinted variations that help to cosmetically enhance your skin tone.

Essie Hand and Body Lotion, Fragrance Free

Essie's hand and body lotion was picked as one of the "best anti-aging products" by the editors of "Women's Health" magazine. Unlike many of the company's body lotions, it's made sans fragrances, which the magazine says is better for sensitive skin. The lotion comes formulated with standard emollients to moisturize your skin, while alpha hydroxy acids exfoliate. Effective amounts of aloe vera extract help to moisturize and comfort your skin to avoid the irritation that's sometimes associated with AHAs.

Doctors Dermatologic Formula Glycolic 10% Exfoliating Oil Control Gel

DDF uses alpha hydroxy acids with a concentrated strength of 10 percent, according to Begoun, which is one of the highest concentrations available in over-the-counter products. DDF also adds salicylic acid. The AHAs help exfoliate the surface of your skin but don't do well with penetrating the oil in your pores. That's where the salicylic acid comes in, as it can effectively dissolve oil and exfoliate inside your pores.

DHC Balancing Lotion

DHC makes its balancing lotion as a skin toner that you apply after cleansing your skin. It helps lift away any oil residue you may have left after washing. The toner also balances your skin with a combination of soothing herbal extracts and alpha hydroxy acids, reports Begoun. Additionally, you'll find beneficial skin conditioners in the toner like glycerin and placental protein, which help boost your skin health. Unlike many toners, DHC doesn't use alcohol, which can have a negatively drying effect on your skin.
