Microdermabrasion is a popular over-the-counter skin care regimen for reducing the signs of aging, minimizing the appearance of scars, and evening skin tone, texture and color. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, although over-the-counter products will give results, the best microdermabrasion treatment is that done by a professional because the results will be more noticeable.

According to Your Plastic Surgery Guide, microdermabrasion is best in the early stages of aging since the procedure does not treat severe discoloration, deep wrinkles and sagging skin. However, if you're looking for a non-invasive treatment option for fine lines, mild age spots, small scars and dullness, then a professional microdermabrasion may be the best option for you.

Prior to your appointment with either a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon, you will be asked to follow a skin-care regimen to get your skin ready for the procedure. In addition, you will be asked to refrain from excessive sun exposure. According to Minars Dermatology, you may be asked to stop topical medications, such as Retin-A before a mircrodermabrasion appointment.

Your skin will be cleansed before the exfoliating begins. You will be asked to remove your contact lenses and wear protective eyewear to keep particles from entering your eye. The microdermabrasion uses a handheld device to spray a fine mist of tiny crystals while simultaneously vacuuming the skin. The top layers of the epidermis are removed, exposing healthy, glowing skin. According to Minars Dermatology, a dermatologist may use a microdermabrasion treatment in conjunction with a chemical peel.

The first treatments will be every two weeks, and then you will have a follow-up appointment every three to six months, according to Minars Dermatology. The procedure can range in price depending on the person's level of expertise in microdermabrasion procedures and the amount of exfoliating that needs to be done to meet your needs. The cost can range from $60 to $175 for each session.

Microdermabrasion is considered a "lunchtime peel" because it can be completed within an hour and has no recovery time. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, some possible side effects are burning, stinging and sensitivity to light. Your skin may appear a pinkish red color for a few hours following the procedure, but this should be back to normal before the end of the day. If you're experiencing pain or your redness is not disappearing, you should contact the dermatologist as soon as possible.

After the first procedure, you will have glowing skin with a smoother texture compared to before the microdermabrasion. In some cases, you may only need one session; however, it can take six or more sessions depending on your overall skincare goals, according to Your Plastic Surgery Guide. Once you have completed your full number of treatments, your fine lines and wrinkles will be reduced, acne will improve, and skin tone and texture will be even. According to Minars Dermatology, microdermabrasion does not decrease the size of pores, however, it can minimize the appearance of pores.
