Acne marks can appear on the face as a result of picking or popping pimples on the skin. These skin discolorations can last weeks if untreated, and can be difficult to eliminate. This is because the discolored marks are comprised of tougher, drier skin that can remain on the face even after the surrounding skin has been sloughed away. In order to effectively diminish and remove acne marks, it is important to use a few effective home remedies.

Softening with Olive Oil

Acne marks can be tougher than the surrounding skin, so it becomes necessary when eliminating acne marks to first soften the skin by applying a non-comedogenic oil. Olive oil does not clog the pores, and it has been used for centuries on the skin. It can loosen dead and discolored skin without causing more acne breakouts. Massage about 1 tbsp. of olive oil into the skin using the fingertips, then lay a steaming hot washcloth onto the face to loosen the skin even more. After the cloth cools completely, use it to wipe off the remaining olive oil. Repeat twice per day.

Exfoliating with Baking Soda

Exfoliating the skin buffs away the loosened acne marks by gentle physical removal. It is important when removing discolorations to use a natural exfoliant that will not irritate or scrape the skin. Baking soda is comprised of smooth, rounded particulates that are highly effective and gentle on the skin. To use baking soda as an exfoliant, combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water, and massage the paste that is formed onto the skin using small, circular motions. After around 2 minutes, rinse off the baking soda paste with water. Repeat up to three times per week.

Toning with Lemon Juice

Once the dead and discolored skin has been removed, a toner high in vitamin C can be applied to help rebuild skin cells so that the skin can become balanced and evenly toned more quickly. Lemon juice is very high in vitamin C, and can be used on the skin safely in its natural form. To use lemon juice as a toner, fill an empty, clean spray bottle with concentrated lemon juice, then spray the juice onto the skin after it has been softened and exfoliated. Allow the juice to dry onto the skin, and repeat up to three times per day.
