Acne is an inflammatory condition that can make the skin appear dirty, oily and unbalanced. Many people wash their skin too vigorously in an effort to get it "clean" and acne-free. However, as acne is caused by bacteria becoming clogged in the pores, the skin does not have to be unclean to be affected by acne. Over washing can actually exacerbate acne breakouts. To properly clean the skin, without exacerbating acne, it is helpful to use a few gentle, natural skin washes.

Cleanser for Sensitive Skin

Skin that is affected by acne is more sensitive and prone to irritation than normal skin and can become aggravated by chemicals often found in standard facial soaps. One alternative is to use a soap or a cleanser that is designed specifically for sensitive skin. Cleansers and soaps formulated for sensitive skin types are free of harsh chemicals, perfumes, dyes and fillers that could inflame the skin, and they can keep the skin clean, without irritating it. The skin should be wet thoroughly, lathered well with a sensitive skin soap, then rinsed with water. Scrubbing or rubbing the skin should be avoided. Wash the skin lightly with a sensitive skin soap twice per day.

Baking Soda Wash

Sometimes acne can erupt on the skin because dead skin cells build up and clog the pores. Using a baking soda wash helps remove dead skin cells, and enables the pores to remain clear and free of blockages. One to 2 tsp. of baking soda should be combined with 1 tsp. of water, massaged into the skin with your fingers for two minutes, then rinsed off with water. The baking soda should not be scrubbed in too aggressively, which can cause irritation. A baking soda wash should only be used up to three times per week.

Oil Cleansing

Oil bonds to other oil better than soap can and enables oils and sebum that are trapped inside the pores to be flushed out more easily. It is important when cleansing with oil to use a non-comedogenic oil, such as castor, olive or jojoba oil. Massage 1 tsp. of oil onto the skin for three minutes, then drape a steaming washcloth over the face. This will open up the pores to release trapped oils, sebum and bacteria. Once the washcloth cools down, use it to wipe off the remaining oil. The skin can be cleansed with oil twice per day.
