Tea Tree Oil for Acne
Tea tree oil is an essential oil obtained from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia by steam distillation of the leaves. Tea tree oil has been used in various commercial products including skin care lotions, cosmetics, anti-acne remedy, toothpastes, shampoos and mouthwash etc.
Why tee tree oil is used to treat acne?
Tea tree oil is an strong antimicrobial natural remedy used for treating acne. It contains terpinen-4-ol that give it strong antimicrobial property. Bacterial infection of hair follicles is the foremost causes of acne. Though infection of hair follicles can be treated in several ways, tea tree oil is the natural and safest method. It does not cause fatal side effects and can be used easily, involves no complex procedure.
A comparative study was performed over Tee tree oil and Benzoyl peroxide. The study was performed on 124 persons with acne. After three months of usage, Benzoyl peroxide was proved to be more effective than Tea tree oil. But when side effects as measured, Benzoyl peroxide produced more fatal side effects as compare to to tea tree oil.
Gram Positive Bacteria:
Gram positive bacteria are those bacteria that stains blue or violet during gram staining process. Acne may be caused due to infection of various types of gram positive bacteria. Therefore, tea tree oil is used to treat such acne breakouts as it is effective against a wide range of gram positive bacteria like Betahaemolytic streptococcus, Staphyloccus epidermidis, Propioni-bacterium acnes, Staphyloccus pyrogenes, Staphyloccus pneumoniae.
Gram Negative Bacteria:
Gram Negative Bacteria are those bacteria stain red or pink during gram staining process. Like gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria may also cause skin infection. Tea tree oil also covers a wide range of gram negative bacteria like Klebsiella pneumoniac, Shigella sonnei, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli etc.
Fungi is another fundamental cause of acne breakouts. Though there are synthetic remedies for treating fungus acne, people still tend to use natural ways as they are more effective and safest as well. Tea tree oil is effective for treating fungus acne caused by Thermoactinomycetes vulgaris, Aspergillus niger, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis etc.
