Symptoms of Rash on Dry Skin Symptoms of Rash on Dry Skin

The skin becomes dry when it loses too much water or oil, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Aging and dry climates are often to blame for this condition. In some cases, dry skin can be persistent, requiring diligent self-care to treat and prevent it from occurring. Severe dry skin or dryness caused by a specific condition can be accompanied by a rash. This rash can take on many forms, depending on the existing condition.

Itching

Dry skin often itches whether or not any visible symptoms exist. Some rashes, such as eczema, that accompany dry skin can cause moderate to severe itching. Dry skin treatments, such as ointments or thick moisturizers, may take time to improve the condition, but itching may be reduced with just one application.

Scaling

Dry skin often takes on the appearance of scaling. Scaly skin can appear white, or even silvery, depending on the individual. Serious dry skin can crack and bleed. The open wounds may be surrounded by peeling skin. Scratching the area can lead to shedding of skin flakes. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics points out that fine lines become more visible, the skin is often rough and has a dull appearance. When the skin begins cracking, it can take on an appearance similar to a fish net.

Inflammation and Lesions

Persistent scratching of the skin can cause a thickening and buildup of skin cells. The University of Iowa describes this as lichenification---thick and rough patches of skin that cracks. When the skin cracks it can be painful or become infected. Many types of skin conditions cause characteristic rashes. Eczema is commonly associated with dry skin. It can develop round, scaly, itchy red patches that appear in various locations of the body. Raised, red bumps can appear in small or large clusters on different parts of the body. This can be from a condition called keratosis pilaris, another condition that accompanies dryness, says the American Academy of Dermatology. Any other rash that appears with dry skin can cause redness and inflammation.
