Stridex for Acne
Acne is a condition classified by the type and severity of blemishes that appear mainly on your face, neck and shoulders. Although you can suffer from mild, moderate or severe acne outbreaks into your 40s and 50s, 80 percent of all acne outbreaks occur between the ages of 11 to 30, according to the National Institutes of Health. While clean skin is important to keep acne from getting worse, clearing acne requires medication that works below the surface of your skin. Stridex is an acne control product that was introduced in 1959 as one of the first treatments available for home use.
Stridex for acne includes five products designed for different skin types and various degrees of acne severity. Stridex products include Essential, Maximum and Sensitive alcohol-free pads, Naturally Clear alcohol-free pads that contain 98.4 percent natural ingredients and Intensive Acne Repair that includes both cleaning pads and a topical gel in a two-step process for a more severe case of acne.
All Stridex products feature salicylic acid, in different amounts, as the active ingredient. The lowest concentration, .05 percent, is in Stridex Sensitive pads. Essential and Naturally Clear pads contain 1 percent salicylic acid and Maximum pads and Intensive Acne Repair contain 2 percent salicylic acid. Intensive Acne Repair also features 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide as an additional active ingredient.
Salicylic acid is an acne medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000. According to MayoClinic.com, salicylic acid works to reduce inflammation and break up the plug that blocks your skin pores. Benzoyl peroxide is a stronger medication that acts on the acne causing Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, as well as working to remove oil and dead skin cells that clog pores.
Remove surface dirt and oil from your face with a gentle cleanser before applying Stridex. Run a Stridex pad over your face and neck, using gentle pressure only. Do not use a scrubbing motion as this can irritate acne. Use another pad and repeat the process to make sure you remove all traces of dirt or oil left on your face. Allow the medication to air dry.
Using Stridex for acne will not produce immediate results. You may even see your acne condition worsen during the first few days of treatment, but this should subside as your skin becomes accustomed to the product's active ingredients. No matter which product you choose, start slowly by using Stridex once per day, and gradually work your way up to three applications each day. You can expect to see positive results within four to eight weeks.
The medications in Stridex can cause side effects, such as stinging, skin irritation, excessive drying and/or scaling. If you start using Stridex once per day and skin irritation continues, switch to a milder version.
If you use Stridex continuously for two months, and see no improvement in your condition, MayoClinic.com recommends consulting with a doctor or dermatologist.
