Stress is a common cause of acne. When stress occurs, the body releases a surge of hormones called androgens. These hormones increase the oil production in the skin which increases the chances of an acne breakout. For people that suffer from periodic stress acne, over-the-counter remedies typically used for mild acne as well as stress reduction techniques can help reduce stress and breakouts.

Benzoyl Peroxide

According to the American Academy of Dermatology website AcneNet, benzoyl peroxide is the mainstay of over-the-counter acne products. Many OTC creams, cleansers and masks contain benzoyl peroxide for its acne-fighting properties. Benzoyl peroxide combats skin bacteria and excess oil, which are two main factors in developing acne. Using a benzoyl peroxide cream of 2.5 percent or 5 percent can help reduce the excess oil production that occurs during stress. In addition, benzoyl peroxide can be used as as spot treatment by putting it only on active pimples that occur sporadically because of stress.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is another ingredient commonly found in OTC acne products. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, this ingredient does not reduce oil or bacteria. Instead, salicylic acid regulates skin cell shedding to prevent dead skin cells from building up and clogging the pores. In addition, salicylic acid is in the aspirin family, which makes it effective at reducing inflammation.

Stress Reduction

Stress reduction techniques can help prevent or reduce the physical effects of stress on the body, including acne. Exercise is a key element to stress reduction. An active lifestyle increases the release of neurotransmitters called endorphins. This produces a sense of well-being. Even light physical activity, such as walking, can help reduce stress. In addition to exercise, meditating by sitting quietly and clearing the mind can help reduce a person's overall stress level. This can be done in as little as 10 minutes a day. Some physical activities incorporate meditation, such as yoga, and may be beneficial for people with high stress levels.
