Visit your doctor when unexplained changes occur on the skin on your chest on any other part of your body. These bumps may not require invasive treatment but may be contagious or signal preventable infections. The texture, number, size and appearance of the red bumps on your chest help your doctor diagnose the condition. Your doctor can provide treatments and preventative actions.

Acne can form small red bumps on your chest in the form of pimples. Pityriasis rosea is a skin rash that may originate on your chest or somewhere at the center of your body and sweep outward in a pine-tree shape. Chickenpox is a common childhood viral infection that can produce red bumps on your chest. The adult form of chickenpox is called shingles.

Acne papules look like small raised bumps that may be red and tender. Acne pustules are red, tender bumps that have white pus on the tip. Pityriasis rosea usually begins as a single, slightly raised and scaly patch on your back, chest or abdomen, the Mayo Clinic says. You may develop smaller scaly spots on your back, chest or abs as pityriasis rosea progresses. Headache, stuffy nose and a sore throat may accompany pityriasis rosea. Chickenpox may develop a red, itchy rash that resembles insect bites on your chest or on your face, scalp and back. Small liquid-filled blisters may form as chickenpox progresses. A fever or headache may accompany the condition.

You may develop acne on your chest if glands in your skin produce too much oil. Acne can result in irritation that can occur when bacteria build up on your skin or if you shed skin cells irregularly. According to the Mayo Clinic, the exact cause of pityriasis rosea is unclear, but an infection may result from strains of viruses such as the human herpes virus. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is highly contagious and may spread quickly in environments such as schools and child care facilities. A varicella vaccination can help you avoid contracting chickenpox.

Acne on your chest may leave scars that may discolor your skin. Complications that may occur with pityriasis rosea include severe itching or brown spots left behind after the rash heals. Chickenpox may produce complications in pregnant women, children, people with weak immune systems or other skin conditions. Chickenpox can lead to bacterial infections of the skin or pneumonia. Inflamation of the brain is a rare complication that may result from chickenpox, the Mayo Clinic says.

You can treat acne on your chest with over-the-counter topical cleansers and ointments, the Mayo Clinic says. Acne treatments may contain benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, salicylic acid or lactic acid. Your doctor may prescribe stronger topical treatments or antibiotics for more severe cases of acne on your chest. Pityriasis rosea treatments focus on controlling itching; the condition subsides within four to six weeks. Your doctor may prescribe antiviral medications such as acyclovir or famciclovir to treat a pityriasis rosea infection, the Mayo Clinic says. Chickenpox may not require treatment in people who are otherwise healthy. A doctor may prescribe antiviral medication for chickenpox or antihistamines to help relieve the itching.
