Acne breakouts cause the skin to become inflamed and irritated and can leave behind areas of skin discoloration and scarring that can be difficult to get rid of. Luckily, there are skin products that can eliminate acne breakouts and can diminish skin discolorations caused by blemishes. These products are natural, gentle and highly effective.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a noncomedogenic oil that can help in both flushing out bacteria and sebum from the pores and softening skin discolorations and acne spots. You can find castor oil at any health food store or through an online merchant. Castor oil can be used as a mask or as a cleanser.

To use castor oil as a mask, the oil should be spread over the skin and allowed to remain there for at least 15 minutes before wiping it off with a washcloth. This is helpful for loosening and softening scarred and discolored skin.

To use castor oil as a cleanser, the oil should be massaged into the skin, covered with a steaming towel to open the pores, then wiped off with a damp washcloth. Castor oil can be used to treat acne and discolorations twice per day.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can be used as a scrub to remove dead skin and bacteria. Removing dead skin helps in both diminishing skin discolorations and in preventing the pores from becoming clogged with the dead skin. Baking soda can be purchased at any grocery or drug store and can be used on the skin once per day.

To use baking soda, a small amount of baking soda can be combined with enough water to form a paste, massaged onto wet skin for 2 to 3 minutes, then rinsed off.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an antimicrobial and antibacterial oil that the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital suggests is as effective as benzoyl peroxide in clearing acne, but without the negative side effects, like redness, peeling or burning on the skin. Tea tree oil is extracted from the Australian Tea Tree plant and sold in its undiluted form.

In order to use tea tree oil on acne spots and breakouts, it should first be diluted in water. The solution should be 95 percent water to 5 percent tea tree oil, and can be used on the skin up to three times per day.
