Skin Care System for Acne and Blemishes
If you are dealing with acne, it is written all over your face in blemishes, all over redness and blackheads. If you thought you wrapped up bouts with acne as a teenager, you may need to think again. Acne affects 80 percent of all people between the ages of 11 and 30, according to the National Institutes of Health. Whether you are a teen or an adult, you can easily combat acne with a few tricks and tweaks to your daily skin care routine.
Cleanse the face and any area of the body with acne twice a day with a gentle wash and lukewarm water. Steer clear of gel-based products with granules, which are abrasive and can irritate sensitive skin.
Avoid washing acne-infected areas with washcloths, as they are too coarse and may cause acne sores to rupture. Do not scrub your face or affected areas vigorously, as this can irritate the skin and make acne worse. Gently use your hands to move skin-care products in circular motions that evenly distribute them over your skin.
Develop a Bedtime Routine
Thoroughly wash your skin at night. "One of the worst things that some women do, which can cause break outs, includes improper cleansing or skipping their skin care routine at night," stressed Dr. Rolanda Johnson, skin scientist at P&G Beauty. "Nighttime is the best time to treat your skin, as your skin is more receptive. Skipping the cleansing step at night negates this optimal treatment time."
Use moisturizers and cosmetics that are oil free, as well as noncomedogenic, meaning they should not cause blackheads, and nonacnegenic, meaning they should not cause pimples. Remember that all cosmetics should be washed off before bedtime. "You are carrying around the day's oil, dead skin cells and dirty and grime floating around in the air," said Erica Vega, a LUSH cosmetics trainer. "The skin needs to breathe and repair itself at night, and with all that on your skin, it will spend all night fighting an uphill battle." In addition, you should choose products with benzoyl peroxide, according to Manhattan-based dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman, which is used to kill bacteria. This is a key component in acne skin care, because it helps skin heal faster.
Your diet can affect more than your weight--it plays a key role in the health of your skin. "Eating healthy is important," stressed Dr. Jaliman. "A recent study has found that eating junk food, especially foods with high starch content, can increase your risk of acne."
Do Not Pick or Squeeze
Avoid picking or squeezing pimples, as this can cause inflammation, spread acne and lead to scars and dark spots. By trying to force the clogged pore open, debris may be forced deeper into the skin, possibly creating nodules or cysts that must be treated by a physician, as over-the-counter products may not be strong enough to dissolve them.
Exfoliate your skin two to three times a week to clean out your pores. Look for products with natural plant extracts and oils. "Unlike mineral oils, natural plant oils are good for the skin and will soften and nourish without causing breakouts," explained Kim Rose Eastburn, a beauty team artist with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. "Look for exfoliants that contain round or refined particles, which will also help to reduce irritation."
