Skin Care Remedies After Swimming

Swimming is good exercise and good fun year-round, thanks to indoor and heated pools. But spending lots of time in the water, whether it's chlorinated water, salt water or fresh water, can cause skin problems. To minimize potential problems, always rinse your skin and hair thoroughly with cool water as soon as you climb out of the pool and avoid products with heavy fragrances or harsh chemicals that may be too much for your skin's increased sensitivity.

Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Chlorine strips away the oil that covers your skin, removing a protective barrier against the elements. With that barrier gone, your skin is more sensitive to the environment, including chemicals and sun exposure, according to the website DERMADoctor. To restore moisture to your skin, a moisturizing cream is the obvious solution---but choose a mild one that's fragrance- and chemical-free since your skin will be more sensitive.

Hydrocortisone Cream for Rashes

Rashes are a fairly common occurrence for swimmers, according to Carol Drucker, M.D., dermatologist and associate professor at the University of Texas's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Both salt water and fresh water may contain organisms that can cause rashes, and exposure to chlorine can cause rashes, too. Drucker says these rashes usually aren't dangerous, but if they are uncomfortable, she recommends treating them with a hydrocortisone cream.

Aloe or Lavender for Sunburn

You can prevent sunburn by applying SPF 15 or higher whenever you're swimming outside, regardless of the temperature or cloud cover, and reapplying it as needed. Covering up with hats and light, loose clothing is also a good idea. Because sunburn increases your risk for skin cancer, prevention is the best idea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. you can relieve a sunburn with cool water and a gentle moisturizer containing healing ingredients such as aloe or lavender.
