Good skin care practices can leave you with younger-looking skin for a longer period of time. By ignoring basic skin care practices and procedures, you could be doing damage to your skint. Most skin care procedures are easily done in the comfort of your own home, and they can help you to see improvement in your skin's tone, appearance, texture and overall health.

Cleansing

One of the biggest mistakes that you can potentially make with your skin care is to cleanse too often or too harshly. Even the individual with the oiliest skin only needs to wash up to twice a day. Over-washing your skin, or using too harsh of a cleanser, can dry out your skin, according to MayoClinic.com. Instead, choose a cleaner that is free of harsh soaps and made with moisturizers. Avoid using scrubbing devices that irritate your skin; a soft washcloth or the palms of your hand are effective and gentle.

Exfoliating

Exfoliation can help to rid your pores of dead skin cell build up and excess oil by using an abrasive agent to gently scrub it away. Exfoliation should only be done once or twice per week at the most, says spa owner and aesthetician Renee Rouleau. While you can purchase creams and cleansers from the drugstore with abrasive ingredients, you can make a sugar scrub at home by mixing a cup of brown sugar with a tablespoon of olive oil. Apply to your face, rubbing in circles for one minute before rinsing away.

Chemical exfoliation can also be done through cosmetic products containing alpha hydroxy acids that dissolve away dead skin. This can also be completed on a greater scale in a dermatologist's office via chemical peel.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing daily allows your skin to compensate for moisture loss throughout the day. Some moisturizers even contain humectants, which attract moisture to the face for better hydration. Most moisturizers are basically the same, and rely on ingredients such as mineral oil and vitamin E to nourish your skin and allow it to feel softer.

If you're concerned about moisturizing because you have oily skin, remember that your sebaceous glands produce oil to make up for lost moisture. When your skin is dry, your sebaceous glands overcompensate by producing more oil. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer can actually help you find balance.

Protecting

Sunscreen should be a vital part of your daily skin care routine. Some moisturizers have a built-in sunscreen, but if not, purchase one to apply all of the areas of your body that are exposed to the sun. Whether it's cloudy out or the middle of winter, your skin is still susceptbile to burns. Sunscreen absorbs the harmful UVA and UVB rays that burn and damage your skin, leaving you more susceptbile to skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Slather one on as the last step to your skin care procedure before you leave the house.
