If you notice a breakout at an inopportune time, such as the night before an important presentation or a special date, you may be able to treat pimples with simple home remedies. Not every acne cure has to involve visits to your dermatologist or expensive topical ointments and creams, but use wisdom and test alternative treatments on a small area of skin first to prevent large-scale allergic reactions.

Toothpaste

Apply a small amount of toothpaste to a pimple once daily to help reduce inflammation and swelling. In "The Numbers Book: A Girl's Guide, 9 Rules to a Healthy, Happy and Beautiful Life," Joanna Hughes recommends this easy home cure, explaining that it serves as a more effective acne treatment than many prescription ones. Limit topical application of toothpaste to the surface of the pimple; it may cause overdrying of normal skin.

Banana

Use a ripe banana mask to help clear troubled skin. In "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child: A Parent's Guide to Child-Friendly Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Injuries," Andrea Candee and David Andrusia suggest this simple, effective acne remedy. They recommend mashing a ripe banana and then applying it to the face as a mask. Let the banana dry on your face overnight, and rinse with warm water in the morning.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal can serve as a natural cure for skin breakouts. Joey Green, in "Joey Green's Amazing Kitchen Cures: 1,150 Ways to Prevent and Cure Common Ailments with Brand-Name Products," explains that this simple home treatment works because "oatmeal is a natural astringent that dries the skin." Prepare a bowl of oatmeal, allow it to cool and then smooth it over your face like a mask. Cover with a warm, damp cloth for 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Lemon

Fresh lemon juice can help to reduce pimples and other forms of acne. Green says lemon juice serves as a natural antiseptic and skin purifier. Apply fresh lemon juice to areas of breakouts with a small cotton ball, and then leave on your skin overnight. Rinse with cool water in the morning, and repeat nightly until your skin begins to clear. Green says lemon juice can also be used topically during the day to help speed the healing of blemishes.

Ice Cube

Applying an ice cube can help to lessen if not cure a pimple on your skin. In "Healing Adult Acne: Your Guide to Clear Skin & Self-Confidence," Richard G. Fried suggests this simple treatment, explaining that the application of cold can help to reduce swelling and redness and help the skin to absorb topical medications. Rub an ice cube over the area of the breakout for two to three minutes, and repeat this process several times throughout your day to see results.
