If you are using over-the-counter acne treatments without experiencing results, you may want to try a few home remedies for acne that are simple and inexpensive. Although there is limited scientific evidence that supports acne home remedies, the available data are based on sound scientific advice. Always use high-quality ingredients to prepare acne home remedies and never use something on your face that you have a known allergy to.

Green Tea

Green tea contains EGCG, or epigallocatechin gallate, a powerful antioxidant that may decrease irregular hormonal activity, reduce inflammation and eradicate the bacteria that lead to bacterium acne. In fact, dermatologist Dr. Gan-Wong reported in 2003 that participants given a 3 percent green tea cream to treat facial acne achieved the same results as participants given a 4 percent benzoyl peroxide solution to treat facial acne.

Make a green tea acne tonic by heating 1 qt. of filtered water to 185 degrees. Steep 1 cup of Sencha green tea, available at Japanese specialty shops and health food stores, in the heated water for 20 minutes. Then allow the mixture to come down to room temperature. Use a cotton ball to apply the tonic liberally to the face and let it dry. Do not rinse it off because diluting the tea will decrease the effectiveness of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Store the leftover mixture in the refrigerator and use it two to three times daily.

Water

According to holistic practitioner Cynthia Perkins, M.Ed., the body needs a certain amount of facial oil to maintain natural moisture. Unfortunately, commercial acne cleaners may remove too much of the natural oil, causing the body to overcompensate for the loss by producing excess facial oil.

Thwart this process by washing your face several times a day with water. The water washes eradicates dirt from facial pores and reduces excess oil buildup throughout the day.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is an at-home folk remedy used to treat acne and acne scars. Olive oil contains palmitic acid and oleic acid, two anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial substances that may heal acne infection and inflammation.

Heat about 1/2 tsp. of olive oil on the stove top or in the microwave. When it is cool to the touch, apply it to the entire face. Apply the oil to your face and massage it in with your fingertips. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and apply a warm towel to your face to open up the pores. When the towel cools down, use it to wipe off any excess oil and then wash off your face with lukewarm water.

Olive oil and salt paste is another folk remedy for getting rid of acne. Make the paste by mixing 3/4 tsp. of olive oil with 1 tsp. of salt. Apply the mixture to your face with your fingertips. Let it sit for approximately 10 minutes and the wash it off with lukewarm water. Use the paste every day for one week and then use it two to three times per week as needed.
