Secrets to Get Rid of Acne

If you suffer from breakouts on a regular basis, you likely want to find proven methods to keep pimples from popping up. If you are unable to control acne at home, you should speak to a dermatologist to go over treatment options. Prescription topical solutions may be recommended to stop active acne and prevent future recurrences.

Use Over-the-Counter Medications as Directed

Using over-the-counter topical treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid does not get rid of acne quickly. You may need to wait as much as six to eight weeks until the treatment solutions successfully get rid of breakouts. For some, these treatments may actually worsen the situation and irritate the face.

Warm Compresses

Although over-the-counter medicines can treat pimples and zits successfully, they are not effective against cystic acne, according to Dr. David E. Bank, director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, New York. Over-the-counter medications are good for superficial pimples, but not cystic acne that lies deeper beneath the skin's surface. Instead, the doctor recommends that you speed up the healing process of cystic acne by placing a washcloth moistened with warm water directly on the blemish for 10 to 15 minute intervals throughout the day. The warmth stimulates the head of the cystic acne blemish to open and eventually get reabsorbed back into the body.

Reduce the Skin's Exposure to Oil

When the pores become clogged with oil, it can aggravate your skin and produce pimples. Limit the amount of oil on the face by cleansing the skin with a mild face wash twice a day. Hair should be kept away from the face to avoid oil transference. Oils can also get on the face and clog the pores with the use of hats, sunglasses and cell phones.

Beta Carotene Supplementation

Beta carotene supplements are recommended by Fitness Magazine as a way to treat acne. Beta carotene is high in vitamin A and the nutrient acts as an exfoliating agent to the skin. Six milligrams of a beta carotene supplement can be consumed on a daily basis. Speak to your doctor first before taking beta carotene as a supplement since you can experience side effects, such as skin discoloration, stomach upset and joint pain.
