Overview

Acne can occur on all skin types and can continue to occur if it is not treated correctly. Although not all people will use the same treatments or methods to clear their skin, there are ways to clear every type of acne. It is important to know what the treatments are, how quickly your skin can be healed of acne and what side effects may occur during treatment.

Treatments

The most common and quickest treatment used to eliminate acne is benzoyl peroxide cream, which is available in a variety of strengths. Benzoyl peroxide works by releasing oxygen onto your skin and killing off acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide can be irritating on sensitive skin types, so many people use diluted tea tree oil, which is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream but does not irritate your skin. Salicylic acid is yet another acne-fighting substance that works by keeping your pores clear of impurities and can be purchased in a cream or gel form.

Side Effects of Benzoyl Peroxide

Certain acne treatment products, such as benzoyl peroxide, can cause side effects on your skin when used too frequently or in a higher concentration. Side effects can include redness, peeling, itching or a burning sensation. If you experience side effects when using benzoyl peroxide, it may indicate that you should decrease the strength or try one of the other acne treatment products.

Warnings

Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid using benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which contain chemicals that may be harmful to a fetus or a growing baby. Alternative acne treatments should be utilized for pregnant or nursing women, such as tea tree oil. Consult your doctor before using an acne product on your skin if you are pregnant or nursing.

Time Frame

Depending on which treatment method you are using, acne will usually clear within 3 weeks after starting a regimented skin care routine. Using benzoyl peroxide will dry up and clear acne breakouts quickly, but it can be irritating on your skin. Tea tree oil may take a little longer than benzoyl peroxide cream to eliminate acne, but it will not cause inflammation or irritation on your skin.

Considerations

If you are following an acne treatment routine for at least 6 weeks, and notice little to no improvement, consult with your doctor or dermatologist. There may be stronger topical creams and pharmaceuticals that are only available by prescription and that could have a positive effect on your skin.
