The sebaceous glands go hand in hand with hair follicles. They are especially prominent with the hair follicles of the face, scalp, chest, and back.
This gland in the skin secrets an oily substance called sebum. Sebaceous glands are primarily found in association with hair follicles, but also occur in hairless areas of the skin except for the hand palms and feet soles.

Sebum is a mix of fat and wreckage of dead fat-producing cells. These cells are constantly replaced by new growth at the base of the glands. Generally it is deposited on the hairs inside the follicles and brought up to the surface of the skin along the hair shaft. In hairless areas, the sebum surfaces through ducts or pores. Sebum produce oil and protects the hair and skin so that it does not dry out and create irritating, itchy patches.

Sebum may gather exceptionally because of poor hygiene, fats rich diet, stress or accelerated glandular activity. Too much secretions of sebum may result in acne. These glands release sebum to keep skin moist, flexible and water-resistant. Sebum, collectively works with other natural oils to forms a barrier known as the hydro-lipid system which keeps foreign substances out of our bodies and keeps water inside the body. When this barrier gets damaged, skin become dry and loses increased moisture.

As an individual get older his skin gets dry because his body does not produce these natural oils efficiently. Dry skin problem may also appear in babies and because the sebaceous glands have not developed in their body properly.

Some people dry skin tendency through inheritance. It can make condition worse for those whose skin is already dry and the hydro-lipid barrier system is also damaged. Such people should be careful for following factors:

  • They should keep their skin moisten during dry, cold and windy weather
  • They should avoid central heating, air conditioning, poor ventilation.
  • They should avoid using chemicals, detergents, soap and solvents because these can cause dry skin.
  • They should not contact with water excessively. Excess contact with water can reduce skin's natural moisturizing factors.

Sebaceous glands play an important part for our body. Too much activity of these glands may affect us negatively. On the other hand, it may also cause problem if their functioning get weaken

One can improve the functioning of these glands by taking care of several things such as taking healthy diet, sleep well, drinking good amount of water, using mild soaps and shampoos for washing skin and hair, avoiding abrasive cleansers, using good moisturizers, etc.
