Retinol When Pregnant Retinol When Pregnant

Retinol is a kind of vitamin A that can be applied topically to the skin or taken internally to treat acne, sun damage and wrinkles. Though common in prescription medications and available in a milder form over the counter, retinol should not be taken by pregnant women because it may cause problems for the developing fetus.

Retinoids are a kind of prescription drug that are a derivative of retinol. They also are available over the-counter and can be used in topical formulation like tretinoin and adapelene by prescription, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. They work by encouraging faster collagen production in the skin, helping to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and acne scarring.

Though retinol and other retinoids are helpful for the skin, they should not be used by pregnant women, just as tuna and caffeine shouldn't be eaten. The skin absorbs the retinol, which can get in the bloodstream and to your baby, potentially causing harm.

Discontinue Use

If you have been using retinol and then find out you're pregnant, there's no need to be concerned. Simply discontinue use of the products for the duration of your pregnancy. According to the Baby Center website, there is no evidence that retinol or other retinoids harm the baby, but it hasn't been studied enough to be conclusive.

Skin Care Options

Retinol is intended to even out your skin tone and give you a radiant complexion. For some women, pregnancy can provide glowing skin -- but some women experience breakouts. If you suffer from the latter, consult with your doctor and consider using salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide-based products, says Baby Center.
