Removing Blackheads Without Expensive Products

Overview

Blackheads are a form of acne also known as comedones. These blemishes are caused when dead skin cells and natural oils cause a blockage near the surface of a hair follicle, according to the Mayo Clinic. Blackheads get their name because the top of the blockage is exposed to air, dirt and bacteria and becomes darkened. Treating blackheads is similar to treating any form of acne.

Step 1

Clean the blackhead-prone area twice per day. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a gentle cleanser. These cleansers are usually inexpensive and available in generic brands.

Step 2

Exfoliate the area gently once per day or every other day if there aren't any other types of acne blemishes--such as cysts, pimples or zits--present. Use a slightly rough towel to do this. You may also choose an all-natural exfoliating product, such as an apricot scrub. Exfoliating the area gently will help to remove the plugs that cause blackheads.

Step 3

Keep the hair around the blackheads clean. Your hair contains oils that can transfer to your skin and worsen blackheads. Wash your hair daily with shampoo and keep your hair off of the affected areas, states Medline Plus.

Step 4

Rinse your skin often with plain water. Because blackheads are caused by excess sebum, or natural oil, build-up and dead skin cells, rinsing your skin often will help to remove these and minimize the risk of new blackheads forming, while helping to heal the blackheads that are present. Be sure to rinse after sweating and after touching the area with anything, such as your hands or a phone that may harbor bacteria or oils.
