Blackheads resemble a tiny black dot on the skin that can mar an otherwise even complexion. Known medically as open comedones, this term refers to the oil that clogs the pores and turns a black color from air exposure. In order to reduce the blackhead, you must work to remove the oil, dead skin cells and bacteria that may have invaded the pore.

Rose Water & Oatmeal Mask

This mask allows you to exfoliate the skin with the oatmeal and soothe the skin with rose water according to CareFair.com. Mix oatmeal powder with rose water, which can be purchased at most drugstores and discount superstores, just enough to make a paste. Gently massage the paste onto the face and leave on the skin for 15 minutes. Rinse the paste off with warm water, then follow with a splash of cold water to encourage the pores to close.

Azaleic Acid/Vitamin A

Azaleic acid is a mild acid that can be applied to the skin in order to kill bacteria that can cause inflammation in the skin according to DERMA Doctor. When azelaic acid is applied to the skin, it can reduce blackheads as well as prevent future blackheads from forming. The acid is found in brands such as Azelex Cream and Finacea.

Another topical remedy for blackheads is vitamin A cream, which encourages exfoliation of the pores. When applied to the skin, the cream keeps the oil and other sticky substances that collect in the pores from sticking to them. Topical forms of vitamin A include Retin A, retinol and retinyl palmitate according to DERMA Doctor.

Extraction

Extraction is a method for blackhead removal that attempts to manually remove the blackhead. Because extraction can lead to scarring, this must be performed carefully, if at all, according to Medical News Today. Begin by heating a pot of hot water for several minutes and then placing a towel over your head. Steam your face for five minutes in order to open the pores and then utilize an either extraction tool or your clean fingers placed on either side of the blackhead; press down. If the blackhead does not immediately free from the skin, do not attempt to extract any further as doing so could cause scarring.
